No one ever said geneticists couldn’t have a sense of humor.
Back in 1984, Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and her collaborator, Gerd Jürgens, published a study identifying and naming a number of embryonic lethal Drosophila mutants from a large-scale mutation screen that caused a variety of deformities.
Everyone’s genes have natural variations known as mutations. Most of these variations are not harmful and are responsible for traits like height and eye color. However, there are some variations, called “pathogenic” mutations, that are known to increase a person’s risk of developing disease. These pathogenic mutations, because they are located in a person’s genes, can then be passed from parent to child, creating heritable forms of disease, such as cancer.

Hereditary cancer screening is a powerful clinical tool that has significantly evolved since the advent of next generation sequencing (NGS) technology. Modern screening tests sequence a single patient DNA sample for variations in a panel of hereditary cancer-associated genes for a little over $200, making critical insight into a patient’s predisposed risk for cancer more accessible than ever before.
